Fatty liver and its traditional treatments

The liver is one of the vital organs of the body that plays important roles in the storage and metabolism of fats. Normally, the liver stores about 5% of its weight as pure fat. When the amount of fat in the liver increases to more than 5% of its weight, it develops fatty liver disease. Fatty liver occurs especially in liver failure diseases and due to nutritional disorders and diseases.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

This type of liver disease is common throughout the world, especially in developed Western countries. In traditional Iranian medicine, non-alcoholic fatty liver is known as cold and wet dysentery, which is accompanied by symptoms such as whiteness of the face, lips, tongue, anemia, weakness, change in complexion to black, light urine, and odorless stool. In this case, cold hepatic dysentery is particularly likely to cause fatty liver problems.

Traditional treatments for fatty liver

In traditional medicine, the use of warm and liver-strengthening spices is recommended for the treatment of fatty liver. The most important medicinal ingredients for the treatment of fatty liver include the following:

  1. Mastaki
  2. Cinnamon
  3. Clove
  4. Honey

These ingredients are used as the main ingredients to reduce cold and remove phlegm from the liver, effectively helping to treat fatty liver.

Ma-alasal (Honey syrup)

Ma-alasal is one of the key remedies in traditional medicine for colds. This simple mixture consists of water and honey, but for added strength, warming herbs such as cinnamon are added. This mixture is called compound Ma-alasal morakab which is made by combining a base of honey and water with additional herbs.

By increasing the heat of the stomach and liver and strengthening these two organs, this syrup effectively reduces cold and phlegm in the liver and treats fatty liver.

Scientific and clinical studies

Various studies show that the compounds in honey and cinnamon have positive effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver. For example, in a clinical trial titled “Effects of cinnamon consumption on lipid factors, liver enzymes, insulin resistance and inflammatory factor hs-CRP in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver”, it was found that cinnamon significantly reduced insulin resistance, fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, triglycerides, liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT) and hs-CRP. These results indicate the positive effects of cinnamon in improving liver function and treating fatty liver.

Conclusion

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a common disease caused by malnutrition and unhealthy lifestyle. Traditional remedies such as mixed honey and cinnamon can effectively reduce liver coldness and strengthen it, remove phlegm, and help improve liver condition. For people with fatty liver, it is recommended to use these natural remedies and manage their disease with appropriate changes in lifestyle and nutrition.
